What to Expect at Your Hearing Aid Consultation
You’ve decided you are ready to consider hearing help! This is wonderful, there are so many studies about the effects of hearing loss on our bodies and our health. Today is going to start a journey that you will not regret.
I like to start by asking questions about the patient and why he/she wants to hear better. I also like to understand their lifestyle as this helps with the programming of the hearing aids.
If this is your first time wearing hearing aids, it can be nerve-wracking. Most people wait 7-12 years before they consider hearing help, during that time the brain has become quite accustomed to hearing at a muted level. Imagine having your hearing return in just a few moments, the brain doesn’t know what to do with all the new information. For this reason, I purposely take this process slowly for the patient.
I tend to start with the hearing aids programmed at a “first fit” type of situation because it’s usually a good starting point and I don’t want to startle the patient. Sounds return with a vengeance so taking baby steps is highly recommended. We then sit and chat; we discuss brain adaptation and new-to-you sounds. Quickly, I demonstrate some basic functions of the hearing aid and then have you practice insertion and removal.
Next, we schedule your follow up appointment. I think it’s important to have a few days to borrow the demonstration devices because as I say every day, “you don’t know what you don’t know!”
The follow up appointment is typically a week later. During the appointment, I will ask your opinions on the demonstration of better hearing and answer any questions you may have. A great part of this technology is the hearing aid logs your listening situations, whether it be quiet, noise, car, or calm listening. This is a very helpful counseling tool and helps us determine the level of technology that is most appropriate for you.
From here, the decision is yours. You can choose to better yourself with improved hearing or you can choose to wait even longer. If you choose to move forward, we will discuss some of the personalization options of the hearing aids and then schedule your appointment to return for the hearing aid fitting.
